Taking the train between Kandy and Ella is not just a mode of transport; it is a quintessential cultural journey. Passengers lean out of wide open doorways to catch mountain breezes, school children wave from trackside paths, and vendors stroll through the carriages selling hot vegetable samosas, spicy fried lentils (vade), and sweet tea.
Kandy to Ella Train Ride Itinerary & Duration
The full train journey between Kandy and Ella spans roughly 140 kilometers (87 miles) and takes between 6 to 7 hours, depending on signal clearances and weather conditions. Because the train climbs steadily through steep mountain terrain, it travels at a leisurely, rhythmic pace of 25 to 40 km/h:
- Kandy to Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya): Approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. Many travelers choose to break their journey here to explore historic colonial tea factories, botanical gardens, and cool mountain strawberry farms.
- Nanu Oya to Ella: Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. This second stretch features some of the highest elevations on the network, passing through Pattipola (the highest railway station on the island at 1,897 meters above sea level) before descending through dramatic pine ridges into Ella.
The rail route is part of the historic Main Line originally constructed by British engineers in the 19th century to transport Ceylon tea and coffee from highland estates down to the harbor in Colombo. Key mountain stations along the route include Hatton—the primary jumping-off point for climbing Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada) and exploring Aberdeen and Laxapana Falls—as well as Great Western, Nanu Oya, Ambewela, and Haputale.

The Route Map & Scenic Highlights
As the train snakes through the mountains, the scenery changes dramatically around every bend:
- Upper Mahaweli River Basin: Departing Kandy, the tracks follow the lower river valley before ascending through pine forests and vegetable terraces.
- Hatton & the Great Tea Valleys: Sprawling green tea estates blanket every hillside, dotted with colorful tea pickers carrying woven sacks.
- Pattipola & Summit Pass: The train crosses through the summit tunnel, emerging onto high montane plains and misty cloud forests.
- Haputale & Idalgashinna: One of the most breathtaking sections of the journey, where tracks balance atop narrow mountain ridges offering sweeping valley views on both sides of the carriage.
- Ella & the Nine Arch Bridge: Approaching Ella, the train passes through lush tropical jungle gorges before crossing iconic viaducts near Demodara.
The Ella Odyssey Special Tourist Train

To cater specifically to sightseers, Sri Lanka Railways operates the Ella Odyssey, a dedicated premium tourist train service running between Kandy and Demodara.
Unlike standard passenger trains that stop only briefly at station platforms, the Ella Odyssey is programmed with extended 5- to 10-minute photo stops at iconic viewpoints along the journey. Highlights include panoramic viewing stops at Horsetail Waterfall, St. Clair’s Falls, the Great Western viewpoint, and a 10-minute photo stop directly atop the Nine Arch Bridge.
How to Purchase Train Tickets
Understanding the ticketing system helps ensure you travel comfortably:
Reserved vs. Unreserved Tickets
- Reserved Seats (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class): Reserved seats must be booked in advance and assign you a specific numbered seat in a dedicated carriage. Booking opens 30 days prior to the travel date. During peak tourist seasons (December through April and July through August), reserved seats frequently sell out within minutes of release.
- Unreserved Tickets (2nd and 3rd Class): Unreserved tickets are sold exclusively at station ticket counters on the day of travel. They cannot sell out because there is no limit on passenger numbers. However, unreserved tickets do not guarantee a seat; on crowded days, you may need to stand or sit on your luggage in the aisle or doorway for several hours.
Which Class Should You Choose?
Each carriage class offers a distinct atmosphere:
1. First-Class (Air-Conditioned Observation)
First-class carriages offer plush assigned seating, tinted windows, and sealed air-conditioning. While comfortable and quiet, the sealed windows and locked exterior doors mean you cannot lean out to feel the mountain breeze or take unobstructed photos. It is best suited for travelers who prioritize temperature control and privacy over open-air photography.
2. Second-Class Reserved
Widely regarded as the sweet spot for travelers. Second-class carriages feature comfortable cushioned seats, ceiling fans, and large windows and vestibule doors that remain open throughout the ride. This allows you to soak in panoramic mountain views, feel the fresh air, and snap classic doorway photos safely.
3. Third-Class Reserved
Similar to second-class reserved, but with slightly firmer bench-style seats. The atmosphere is lively, authentic, and fun, with ample space in overhead racks for backpacks and luggage.
4. Unreserved Second and Third-Class
The most economical option and a favorite among budget backpackers. If you choose unreserved tickets, arrive at Kandy Railway Station at least 45 minutes prior to departure to position yourself on the platform as the train pulls in.
Best Side to Sit for Views
- From Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (Nanu Oya): The right side of the train typically offers the best initial views of cascading waterfalls and terraced hillsides.
- From Nanu Oya to Ella: The left side delivers sweeping panoramas over tea valleys, mountain gorges, and the dramatic drop-offs near Haputale and Ella Gap.
