Ravana Falls - Scenic landscape in The Central Highlands, Sri Lanka
THE HIGH COUNTRY & TEA TRAILS

Ravana Falls

Discover Ravana Falls near Ella, Sri Lanka. One of the island's widest tiered waterfalls cascading 25 meters, steeped in the epic legend of King Ravana.

Tumbling down a concave black granite amphitheater along the Ella–Wellawaya highway (A23), Ravana Falls (Ravana Ella) is one of the widest and most photogenic waterfalls in the central highlands. Fed by a highland tributary of the Kirindi Oya, the cascade plunges approximately 25 meters (82 feet) across dramatic stepped tiers into a mist-shrouded mountain pool below.

Framed by the precipitous emerald ridges of the Ella Gap, this roaring cascade is a beloved roadside landmark for travelers journeying between the hill country and the southern plains, as well as a prominent sacred station on the Ramayana trail.

The Mythological Heritage of King Ravana

According to the ancient Indian epic Ramayana, Ravana Falls is inextricably linked to the legendary ruler King Ravana:

  • Princess Sita’s Refuge: Folklore recounts that King Ravana abducted Princess Sita and sheltered her in the hidden cliff caverns concealed directly behind the thunderous curtain of water.
  • The Royal Bathing Pools: Local tradition maintains that Princess Sita bathed in the deep, freshwater rock pools fed by the spray of the waterfall during her captivity.
  • Connection to Ravana Cave: The waterfall is believed to have been connected via subterranean passages to the high cliff refuge of Ravana Cave located further up the mountain ridge.

Seasonal Flow & Natural Splendor

The visual appearance of Ravana Falls changes dramatically across the seasons:

  • Monsoon & Rainy Season: During the wet months (October through January), the waterfall swells into an awe-inspiring, roaring torrent that blankets the entire rock face in a massive curtain of foaming white spray.
  • Dry Season: During drier months (May through September), the water volume subsides into graceful, crystalline streams that cascade gently over distinct granite steps, revealing the dark contours and natural formations of the rock.

Practical Visitor Guidance & Safety

  • Roadside Viewing: The base of the waterfall is situated right beside the main A23 road, approximately 6 km south of Ella town. An arched bridge and roadside viewing platforms offer spectacular photo angles without requiring strenuous trekking.
  • Safety Warning: The granite boulders at the base are covered in slick moss and the currents can surge unexpectedly. Climbing the wet upper rocks or swimming in deep turbulence is strictly prohibited due to serious hazard. Visitors should view and photograph the falls safely from designated riverbanks.
  • Local Amenities: Roadside vendors around the bridge sell fresh King coconut (Thambili), roasted sweet corn, and local tropical fruits.
