Seetha Amman Temple

Visit Seetha Amman Temple in Seetha Eliya, Nuwara Eliya. Explore Ashok Vatika, Hanuman footprints, sacred stream murtis & Ramayana heritage.

Nestled among the mist-draped tea hills and cool mountain forests of Seetha Eliya, approximately 5 km southeast of Nuwara Eliya along the Badulla road (A5), the Seetha Amman Temple (Seetha Eliya Kovil) is believed to be the only temple in the world dedicated exclusively to Goddess Sita.

Steeped in ancient devotional tradition, this colorful Dravidian-style kovil marks the revered site of Ashok Vatika (Ashoka Grove), the idyllic royal pleasure garden where King Ravana held Princess Sita in captivity following her abduction from India in the Sanskrit epic Ramayana.

The Sacred Stream & Discovered Idols

Flowing directly beside the temple compound is the cold mountain brook known as Seetha Ela:

  • Sita’s Bathing Waters: Devotional folklore identifies this stream as the secluded pool where Princess Sita bathed and gathered water during her prolonged confinement.
  • Submerged Sacred Murtis: Several centuries ago, three antique stone idols depicting Lord Rama, Lakshmana, and Goddess Sita were discovered naturally resting on the rocky stream bed.
  • Enshrined Relics: Today, these weathered, sacred stone murtis are enshrined alongside modern golden brass deities within the inner sanctum of the kovil.

Footprints of Lord Hanuman (Hanuman Pada)

Across the exposed granite riverbed and cliffside rock formations flanking the stream, visitors can observe deep, oversized circular impressions in the stone:

  • Hanuman’s Landing: Believers revere these distinctive rock indentations as Hanuman Pada—the footprints imprinted into solid stone when the monkey god Hanuman leapt across the ocean to Lanka to locate Sita and deliver Rama’s signet ring.
  • Ravana’s Royal Tusker: Adjacent depressions are associated in local folklore with the heavy footfalls of King Ravana’s royal elephant that guarded the grove.

Architecture & Religious Ceremonies

The temple complex showcases vibrant South Indian temple architecture characterized by a multi-tiered gopuram painted with intricate reliefs:

  • Epic Depictions: Painted sculptures narrate scenes from the Sundara Kanda, depicting Hanuman meeting Sita beneath the Ashoka trees and the eventual battle against Ravana’s forces.
  • Daily Pooja Timings: Morning pujas take place from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and evening ceremonies are conducted from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
  • Festivals: Devotees from across the globe gather here during Rama Navami, Maha Shivaratri, and Hanuman Jayanti to participate in vibrant devotional rituals and offerings.
