Located near Welimada in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, Divurumpola Temple (Divurumpola Raja Maha Viharaya) is a peaceful Buddhist monastery revered for both its monastic heritage and its profound place in the Ramayana epic. In recent decades, the temple has become one of the most prominent pilgrimage destinations along the Ramayana trail, revered by devotees as the sacred ground where Goddess Sita underwent the fire ordeal, or Agni Pariksha, to prove her purity.
Divurumpola in Ramayana Legend
The fire ordeal (Agni Pariksha) is among the most dramatic and revered episodes of the Indian epic Ramayana. Following Lord Rama’s victory over King Ravana to rescue Sita, rumors regarding her time in captivity in Lanka prompted Sita to assert her unwavering fidelity through the ultimate trial of truth.
Sita requested Lakshmana to prepare a pyre. Stepping fearlessly into the blazing flames, she called upon Agni, the fire god, to attest to her innocence and virtue. Agni arose unharmed out of the flames, bearing Sita gently in his arms and presenting her untainted to Lord Rama before the assembled host. Rama acknowledged her purity, declaring that he never doubted her fidelity but that the ordeal was necessary so the world would never doubt her honor.
In Sinhala, the name Divurumpola translates directly to “the place of oath.” For centuries, local tradition recognized this consecrated ground as a solemn venue for taking binding oaths to settle disputes, with villagers believing that false oaths sworn here brought divine retribution. Today, the temple grounds feature vivid Ramayana wall murals, dedicated shrines, and commemorative markers illustrating Sita’s trial by fire, attracting thousands of Hindu pilgrims and cultural travelers from around the world.
