Ussangoda National Park

Discover Ussangoda National Park in Ambalantota. Explore unique red serpentine soil cliffs, prehistoric archaeology, sea turtle beaches, and Ramayana lore.

Perched dramatically above the southern coastline in Ambalantota, Hambantota District, Ussangoda National Park is an extraordinary coastal plateau defined by striking crimson-red earth, stunted coastal vegetation, and sweeping views over the Indian Ocean. Declared the island’s 21st National Park in 2010, this 11-hectare nature reserve is cherished for its rare geological formation, prehistoric archaeological significance, and deep roots in the Ramayana epic.

Flanked by rocky coves and pristine beaches that serve as nesting grounds for marine sea turtles, Ussangoda stands out as one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes on the southern shores.

Geological Uniqueness & Serpentine Soil

The surreal rust-red appearance of Ussangoda stems from its rare geological composition:

  • Serpentine Geology: Ussangoda is one of four known serpentine outcrops on the island. The soil contains exceptionally high concentrations of heavy metals such as nickel, chromium, iron, and magnesium, while lacking essential plant nutrients like calcium and potassium.
  • Stunted Micro-Flora: This harsh geochemical soil environment inhibits the growth of tall trees and conventional coastal shrubs. Instead, the plateau is carpeted by prostrate grasses, hardy mosses, and specialized dwarf plants uniquely adapted to heavy-metal soils and salty maritime winds.
  • Meteorite Hypothesis: Local folklore often recounts that the plateau was scorched by a prehistoric meteorite strike, an impression reinforced by the vitrified appearance of the reddish rocks and iron-rich crust.

Prehistoric Archaeology & Miniha Gal Kanda

Beyond its geological curiosity, Ussangoda occupies a significant place in prehistoric human history:

  • Miniha Gal Kanda: The adjoining headland of Miniha Gal Kanda (“Man’s Stone Hill”) is an important Stone Age archaeological excavation site where ancient stone tools, microliths, and animal remains dating back thousands of years to the late Pleistocene were unearthed.
  • Marine Turtle Breeding: The secluded sandy bays nestled directly below the red sea cliffs provide critical, undisturbed nesting habitats for several endangered sea turtle species, including olive ridley and green turtles.

The Ramayana Legend & Hanuman’s Fire

In Hindu mythology and regional folklore, Ussangoda is an important pilgrimage landmark along the Ramayana trail:

  • Ravana’s Airfield: Popular tradition holds that the elevated, flat coastal bluff of Ussangoda served as an airfield and landing strip for King Ravana’s celestial flying vehicle, the Pushpaka Vimana.
  • Hanuman’s Scorched Earth: According to the epic, after discovering Princess Sita in captivity, Lord Hanuman was captured and his tail was set ablaze by Ravana’s guards. Hanuman used his burning tail to set fire to Ravana’s palaces across Lanka. Devotees believe Ussangoda was one of the strongholds consumed by the fire, forever searing the soil into its scorched reddish-brown hue.

Practical Visitor Guidance

  • Location: Situated along the southern coast in Ambalantota, accessible via a short turn-off from the Colombo–Kataragama highway (A2) near Nonagama Junction.
  • Visiting Hours & Shade: Open throughout the daylight hours. Because the open plateau has virtually no trees or shade, the best visiting times are early morning or late afternoon (4:30 PM to 6:30 PM) to watch the sunset over the crashing ocean waves.
  • Conservation Etiquette: Driving vehicles onto the fragile red soil plateau is strictly prohibited; visitors must explore on foot and carry all trash back out to safeguard the delicate ecosystem.

Connected Southern & Ramayana Highlights

  • Bundala National Park: Renowned UNESCO Biosphere wetland reserve hosting thousands of migratory flamingos and coastal birds just east of Hambantota.
