Meemure

Discover Meemure, Sri Lanka's most isolated mountain village nestled beneath Lakegala. Explore wilderness trekking, natural rock slides, and river camping.

Tucked deep within the mist-wreathed valleys of the Knuckles Mountain Range, Meemure is one of the most secluded and authentic traditional villages on the island. Dominated by the dramatic, pyramid-shaped monolith of Lakegala rock, this remote mountain village has preserved centuries-old rural traditions, terraced rice paddies, and pristine river ecosystems far removed from modern urban bustle.

Historically isolated from the outside world due to the rugged mountain topography of the Dumbara Hills, Meemure has emerged as a premier destination for wilderness trekking, natural waterfall sliding, and eco-camping. Travelers journeying to this hidden valley are rewarded with crystalline rivers, dense cloud forests, and warm village hospitality that offers a rare glimpse into an ancient way of life.

The Legendary Mountain of Lakegala

Looming sharply over the village like a giant sentinel, Lakegala (1,310 meters) is the defining landmark of Meemure. The mountain’s name translates to “Target Rock” due to its distinctive pointed pyramid summit.

According to ancient folk legends and Ramayana lore, King Ravana is said to have used the peak of Lakegala as a lookout post and aeronautical launchpad for his mythical flying craft, the Dandu Monara. Today, the challenging ascent of Lakegala attracts adventurous climbers who scale its steep granite slabs using fixed ropes under the guidance of seasoned local trackers.

Village Culture & Authentic Highland Hospitality

What makes Meemure truly unforgettable is the lifestyle of its small community. For generations, villagers have lived in complete harmony with the surrounding forest, practicing sustainable chena (slash-and-burn) farming and paddy cultivation fed by ancient gravity irrigation channels.

Visitors staying in local eco-lodges or village homestays enjoy traditional meals cooked over firewood hearths in clay pots. Feasts typically feature locally harvested organic red rice, jackfruit curries, fresh river sprats, wild leaf sambols (gotu kola), and freshly tapped sweet kitul treacle drizzled over creamy buffalo curd.
