Manavari Temple

Discover Manavari Temple near Chilaw, Sri Lanka. Learn about the revered Ramalingam installed by Lord Rama, temple puja timings, and Ramayana trail highlights.

Manavari Temple, officially known as Manavari Ramalingeshwara Kovil, is one of the most sacred pilgrimage shrines on the island’s legendary Ramayana trail. Situated in the rural village of Manavari, roughly 6 kilometers north of the coastal town of Chilaw in the Puttalam District, the sanctuary holds immense spiritual significance for Hindu devotees worldwide.

According to classical Ramayana tradition, Manavari is the revered site where Lord Rama installed his first Shiva Lingam on the island following the epic war with King Ravana. Burdened with Brahmahatya Dosham—the karmic consequence of slaying a Brahmin king—Lord Rama sought absolution through intense prayer at the nearby Munneswaram Temple. In response, Lord Shiva directed Rama to establish four consecrated lingams across the island to purify his soul. The lingam installed here was blessed and named the Ramalingam (Rama Lingam). Outside of the celebrated Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, India, Manavari is venerated as the only place on Earth where a Shiva Lingam bears the personal consecration of Lord Rama.

The Sacred Ramalingam and Temple Grounds

The temple complex is an authentic rural Tamil kovil characterised by peaceful spiritual serenity:

  • The Sanctum of Ramalingam: The primary inner shrine enshrines the ancient granite Shiva Lingam personally consecrated by Lord Rama, where resident priests conduct traditional pujas with sacred milk, flowers, and holy water.
  • Dravidian Temple Gopuram: The ornate entrance tower features multi-tiered carvings depicting scenes from Shaivite mythology, Lord Rama’s devotion, and Hindu deities.
  • Ancillary Shrines: The temple courtyard includes dedicated shrines for Lord Ganesha, Lord Murugan, and the Navagrahas (nine celestial deities).
